5-Day Kenya Safari: Aberdares, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara
Overview
This compact 5-day journey takes you through some of Kenya's most varied landscapes, from the misty highlands of Aberdares National Park to the flamingo-fringed shores of Lake Nakuru and the classic open plains of the Masai Mara.
It's a balanced introduction to Kenya's wildlife diversity, blending forest drives, lake ecosystems, and savannah game viewing.
Travel in a comfortable 4x4 vehicle with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide, staying at established lodges positioned for easy access to the parks.
Safari Highlights
- Tree-hotel experience at The Ark with floodlit waterhole viewing in Aberdares
- Rhino tracking and flamingo flocks at Lake Nakuru
- Extensive game drives in the Masai Mara searching for big cats and plains game
- Scenic drives through the Great Rift Valley with equator crossing
- Realistic chances to observe elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and various predators
Why This Safari Works Well
The route connects three contrasting ecosystems in a logical progression, avoiding excessive long drives while covering forest, lake, and savannah habitats.
Aberdares offers a quieter, more unusual start with mountain forest species rarely seen elsewhere. Lake Nakuru adds birdlife and rhino viewing before the main-event drama of the Masai Mara.
Lodges are inside or very close to the parks, maximizing time on game drives rather than transfers.
At five days, it's ideal for travelers with limited time who still want a genuine multi-park Kenyan safari experience.
Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Aberdares National Park
Your safari begins with a meet-and-greet at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or your Nairobi hotel. After a brief briefing, depart north toward Aberdares National Park (about 3–4 hours depending on traffic).
The park's montane forest, bamboo zones, and open moorlands create a dramatic shift from Nairobi's bustle. Check in at The Ark, a distinctive tree-lodge built around a waterhole and salt lick.
Spend the afternoon on game drives or relaxing on the viewing decks. Forest elephants, buffaloes, bushbuck, and occasionally mountain bongo may appear at the waterhole. Birdlife includes Jackson's francolin and Aberdare cisticola. Visit Chania Falls if time allows.
Dinner is served at the lodge, with spotlights illuminating nighttime visitors at the waterhole.
- Accommodation: The Ark Lodge
- Meals: Lunch, dinner, overnight
Day 2: Aberdares to Lake Nakuru National Park
Early breakfast, then check out and head south. Stop briefly at the Equator viewpoint for photos and a quick explanation of the line's significance.
Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park by late morning for an en-route game drive. The park's alkaline lake often hosts thousands of lesser flamingos, creating striking pink bands against the water.
Check in at the lodge for lunch and a short rest. Afternoon game drive focuses on black and white rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, tree-climbing lions (occasionally seen here), buffaloes, and leopards. The park's mix of woodland, grassland, and lake edge supports diverse bird species too.
Return to the lodge as the sun sets over the Rift Valley escarpment.
- Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, overnight
Day 3: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, depart for the Masai Mara (roughly 5–6 hours with scenic Rift Valley views). The landscape opens up as you approach the reserve.
Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch. Settle in before heading out on an afternoon game drive.
The Masai Mara delivers classic East African savannah: vast plains dotted with acacias, large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and impala, plus good chances of spotting elephants, buffaloes, and predators. Big cats—lion prides, cheetahs, leopards—are often active in the late afternoon.
Return for dinner under the stars.
- Accommodation: Keekorok Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, overnight
Day 4: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
A flexible day dedicated to the Mara. Choose morning and afternoon game drives or a full-day excursion with packed lunch.
Explore different sectors of the reserve, tracking big cats, watching elephant herds at waterholes, or observing topi and hartebeest on the plains. During July–October, the Great Wildebeest Migration may bring dramatic river crossings (timing varies yearly).
Optional visit to a local Maasai village can be arranged (small extra fee paid directly).
Return to the lodge in the late afternoon to relax by the pool or enjoy the lodge grounds, where hippos and other wildlife sometimes wander nearby.
- Accommodation: Keekorok Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, overnight
Day 5: Masai Mara to Nairobi – Departure
Morning breakfast, then depart for Nairobi with a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for photos.
Arrive in Nairobi around midday for lunch at a city restaurant before transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your outbound flight, or to your Nairobi hotel if extending your stay.
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Main activities are game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. Optional extras (at additional cost) include Maasai village visit, balloon safari, or boat ride where available.
