9-Day Kenya Safari: Masai Mara Wildlife & Diani Beach Relaxation
This 9-day journey takes you through some of Kenya's most iconic landscapes, from the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara to the soda lakes of the Rift Valley, before winding down on the warm sands of Diani Beach. It balances classic game viewing with cultural moments and coastal downtime, offering a well-rounded introduction to Kenya's diverse experiences.
Overview
Start with three full days in the Masai Mara, where wildlife gathers year-round and the chances of seeing the Big Five remain strong. Move through Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha for birdlife, rhinos, and gentler activities like boat rides and walks. Finish with several relaxed days on Diani Beach, letting the Indian Ocean provide the perfect contrast to the safari intensity.
The route flows logically north from Nairobi, then south to the coast, using a mix of road transfers and a short domestic flight to keep travel comfortable.
Safari Highlights
- Extended time in the Masai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives
- Opportunities to spot lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo
- Flamingos and rhinos at Lake Nakuru
- Boat rides and nature walks around Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate
- White-sand beaches and ocean views at Diani for unwinding
Why This Safari Works Well
The itinerary gives you solid time in each area rather than rushing between too many parks. Three nights in the Mara allow deeper exploration and flexibility for a full-day drive or village visit. The Rift Valley stops add variety with birds, cliffs, and lakeside scenery before the beach phase eases you back into everyday rhythm. Accommodations are comfortable and well-positioned, and the domestic flight avoids a long final drive.

Wildlife & Activities
Expect realistic sightings shaped by season and luck—Masai Mara delivers the broadest variety, including big cats and migration herds (strongest July–October). Nakuru emphasizes rhinos and birds; Naivasha and Hell’s Gate offer walkable encounters with plains game. Activities stay active but not exhausting: game drives, short walks, boat options, and free beach time.
Travel Pace & Distances
Moderate pace with longer drives on Days 1, 3, and 5 (4–6 hours), balanced by shorter transfers and flight on Day 5. Game drives involve bumpy tracks; beach days are completely relaxed. Total road distance kept reasonable by using the domestic flight.
Best Time to Travel
June to October brings drier conditions and excellent game viewing, especially in the Masai Mara during the wildebeest migration. January–February and November offer quieter periods with good coastal weather. Avoid heavy rains (March–May, late November–early December) when tracks can be muddy.
