7-Day Kenya Safari: Meru, Lake Naivasha & Masai Mara
Overview
This seven-day journey takes you across some of Kenya's most varied landscapes, from the rugged wilderness of Meru National Park to the calm shores of Lake Naivasha and the iconic plains of the Masai Mara.
It combines quieter, less-visited areas with one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations, offering a balanced mix of game viewing, scenic relaxation, and cultural touches. The route avoids the usual crowds in the early days, then builds to the classic Mara experience.
Safari Highlights
- Exploring Meru National Park, tied to the story of Elsa the lioness and home to distinctive northern species
- Close encounters with black and white rhinos in the dedicated conservation area of Solio Game Reserve
- Lakeside downtime at Naivasha with optional boat rides among hippos and birdlife
- Extended time in the Masai Mara for flexible game drives and the chance to see the Big Five in open savannah
- A thoughtful progression from remote northern Kenya to the famous western reserves
Why This Safari Works Well
The itinerary moves logically from north to south, covering different ecosystems without excessive backtracking. Meru offers a peaceful start with unique wildlife, Solio delivers reliable rhino sightings, Naivasha provides a gentle interlude, and the Masai Mara caps the trip with high-density game viewing.
Distances are manageable for a week, and the pace allows time to settle into each place rather than rushing between them. It's well-suited for travellers wanting variety without overwhelming travel days.
Detailed 7-Day Kenya Safari: Meru, Lake Naivasha & Masai Mara Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi Arrival & Transfer to Meru National Park
Your driver-guide meets you at Nairobi airport or your hotel for a short briefing before heading north to Meru National Park. The drive takes you through changing scenery to this remote, less-visited reserve known for its connection to Born Free and its mix of riverine forests and open plains.
Arrive for a late lunch at camp, then head out for an afternoon game drive to get your first sense of the park's wildlife.
- Accommodation: Rhino River Camp
- Meals: Lunch, dinner
Day 2: Full Day in Meru National Park
A full day dedicated to exploring Meru on game drives. The park's diverse terrain supports healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and a range of northern specials often called the Samburu Special Five—Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich—though sightings vary by season and luck.
Return to camp in the late afternoon to relax, with dinner and perhaps a fireside evening if the weather cooperates.
- Accommodation: Rhino River Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 3: Meru to Solio Game Reserve
After breakfast, depart Meru and drive south, crossing the equator en route. Arrive at Solio Game Reserve for lunch, then spend the afternoon on a game drive in this private sanctuary at the foot of Mount Kenya.
Solio stands out for its successful rhino conservation, with good chances of seeing both black and white rhinos, often in small groups, alongside lion and other plains game.
- Accommodation: Aberdare Country Club
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 4: Transfer to Lake Naivasha
A relaxed morning followed by the drive to Lake Naivasha, arriving in time for lunch. The rest of the day is at leisure beside the freshwater lake, famous for its hippo pods and prolific birdlife.
Optional activities include a boat ride to view hippos and waterbirds up close or a guided walk on Crescent Island (both at additional cost, paid locally).
- Accommodation: Lake Naivasha Country Club
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 5: Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara
Depart after breakfast for the Masai Mara National Reserve. The journey takes you into classic savannah country, arriving at camp in time for lunch.
Settle in, then head out for an evening game drive as the light softens over the plains—often one of the most atmospheric times to watch wildlife.
- Accommodation: Enkakenya Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 6: Full Day in the Masai Mara
A flexible day shaped around your interests. Options include an early morning game drive followed by breakfast in camp and another in the afternoon, or a full-day drive with a picnic lunch to cover more ground.
The Mara is renowned for its concentrations of lion, cheetah, elephant, and the great wildebeest herds (seasonal). A sunrise hot air balloon flight can be arranged for a different perspective (additional cost).
Return to camp in the late afternoon to unwind.
- Accommodation: Enkakenya Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi & Departure

Drive back to Nairobi, arriving for a late lunch before your hotel or airport drop-off.
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Wildlife & Activities
Expect realistic sightings shaped by season, weather, and natural behaviour. Meru and the northern areas offer special northern species and quieter drives. Solio excels for rhino viewing. Naivasha focuses on birds, hippos, and optional water activities. The Masai Mara delivers classic Big Five viewing and predator-prey dynamics, especially strong during dry months.
Activities centre on game drives, with flexibility for balloon rides, boat trips, or cultural visits where available.
Travel Pace & Distances
Moderate pace with 3–5 hour drives on most transfer days. Roads vary from tarmac to good dirt tracks. Game drives are in comfortable 4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs.
Best Time to Travel
June to October brings dry weather and excellent wildlife concentrations across all parks, with the wildebeest migration often visible in the Mara. January–February offers good game viewing, greener landscapes, and fewer visitors. Avoid March–May long rains if possible, though short rains (November) can be scenic with fewer crowds.
